GREENE – A pregnant woman was taken to a Lewiston hospital by helicopter Friday morning after she lost control of her car on Allen Pond Road.

Tracy St. Laurent, 41, of Greene had to be extricated from her mangled car. She was listed in stable condition at Central Maine Medical Center later Friday.

“It looks like she’ll be OK, and it looks like the baby will be OK, too,” said Maine State Police Trooper Scott Gosselin.

Investigators said St. Laurent, who is between five and six months’ pregnant, suffered leg injuries in the 7:30 a.m. wreck, a half mile from Route 202.

Gosselin said St. Laurent was driving on Allen Pond Road when her car began to slide across the road on ice and slush. The driver tried to right the car but over compensated, causing it to spin back and forth across the road, Gosselin said. Finally, the car slid sideways off the road and St. Laurent was trapped inside.

“With the first radio report, we thought it was going to be more serious than it was,” Gosselin said. “She was talking to us from the vehicle while she was trapped.”

St. Laurent crashed not far from the intersection of Route 202 and Allen Pond Road. That proved crucial, Gosselin said, because a Maine Department of Transportation lot there provided plenty of space for LifeFlight helicopter to land.

St. Laurent was freed from her car by Greene Rescue and then taken to CMMC. It was believed she was wearing a seat belt when she crashed, which may have protected her and her unborn child from making contact with the steering wheel in the wreck.

The accident was the third in the area in a week involving a pregnant woman. Two were in Auburn. So far, police said, all the victims have survived without losing their babies.
