WINTHROP – On Friday, Feb. 4, Stephen Gould passed away peacefully at home on a snowy Maine morning. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born July 3, 1949 in Caribou to Jerrard and Alletta Gould of Caribou who predeceased him. The family left Maine after selling their potato farm in the early 1950s.

He grew up in Seymour, Conn., and apprenticed at Pratt & Whitney in machining.

He returned to Maine in 1970 where he met his wife, Sally Pond Gould. They settled in the town of Winthrop where they raised their family.

He had been living with a diagnosis of ALS for two years. People who have ALS have a need for special equipment, which is not covered by insurance. Therefore, a fund has been set up at the Winthrop Area Federal Credit Union, to receive donations to purchase such equipment for other patients with this disease.

He had been employed by General Electric of Auburn for 22 years. His co-workers remained in touch with him throughout his disease and there are not enough words that can express the wonderful support they have given him.

He was a man of many trades. He was a machinist and held his Journeyman in Carpentry as well as Milwrighting.

He enjoyed the quiet life of a Maine man. He enjoyed classic cars, teaching his children to hunt, fish, and to respect all people and the environment. He was a man who believed you should always leave a place cleaner than when you found it, return a borrowed item in better condition than when you received it, and always leave people smiling. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his quirky pranks, and for being taken away too soon. Finally, in the words of his granddaughter, β€œhe will have the best view of the big game.”

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sally Gould; their daughters and their families, Angela and Jonathan Valvano of Gloucester, Mass., and their three children, Hannah, Margaret, and Grace; Kim and Joel Stoneton of Winthrop, and their two children, Kelsey, and Haley; Sarah Gould and her fianc, Michael Hebert, of North Carolina. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Green, of Charlotte, Vt.; his brother, Dana Gould, of Smithfield, R.I.; and his sister, Sylvia Llewellyn, of Southbury, Conn. He was a beloved son-in-law to Charlie and Ann Pond of Winthrop. He is also survived by a large extended family, too many to mention, but not too many to remember. He will be missed by family and many friends.
