The Sun Journal editorial of Feb. 2 concerning Gov. Baldacci wanting to hide facts from the public about the gaming commission’s “doings” is right on target. Maine’s Freedom of Information Act is one of the best in the country. Hiding the facts from the public has disastrous effects on democracy.

The Sun Journal should have put that item right next to the story about Foxwoods’ plans to expand to the tune of $700 million.Yes, that’s right; plans for an 825-room hotel, 5,000-seat theater, a large convention center, ballroom, nightclubs and 1,500 new slot machines are on the drawing board. Oh, by the way, 2,300 new workers will be hired to staff this mega-expansion of Foxwoods Resort and Casino. Just imagine the construction workers who will be needed for that. And also the taxes it will generate when it’s finished.

No wonder the governor wants to keep information to himself. After all, he campaigned vigorously against the casino in Maine and against the racino, too.

Connecticut is now reaping the rewards of his efforts. But, of course, we have Powerball and so many innovations of our Megabucks game it’s hard to keep track. And, on top of that, he wants to sell the profits of the lottery so we would lose $150 million over 10 years.

As a Democrat who voted for this governor, I am embarrassed to admit it.
