FALMOUTH – Carlton P. Wing of Landing Woods Lane, Falmouth, died Feb. 8.

He was born in Flagstaff, Feb. 23, 1925, a son of Alvin and Eva Wing. He graduated from Flagstaff High School and joined the U.S. Army after his freshman year at Bowdoin College.

He served as a medic in the 106th Infantry Division 423rd Regiment and was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He was liberated from prison camp Stalag 9B in Bad Orb, Germany, April 1, 1945. After his military discharge, he attended the University of Maine at Orono, joined Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and earned a degree in Civil Engineering.

He started his business career working for Bancroft & Martin Rolling Mills and, after 20 years, joined Megquier & Jones Steel Fabricators working primarily as an estimator and in sales. He became vice-president of Bancroft & Martin and executive vice-president of Megquier & Jones.

He served as a director of the Cumberland Club, was a corporator of Maine Savings Bank and on the Board of Trustees of the Falmouth Memorial Library, serving as co-chairman of the Building Committee when the library was rebuilt in 1994. “Carl” was a member of Maine Good Roads Assoc., American Institute of Steel Construction, the Associated Contractors of Maine, and the Portland Country Club.

As a young man, Carl enjoyed helping with Little League activities. Skiing, motorboat and sailboat outings, and traveling were enjoyed as a family. Carl especially liked golf and participated in tournaments at conventions and at local golf courses.

In 1971, he won Low Gross in the American Institute of Steel Construction Golf Tournament at the Kaanapali Course in Maui, Hawaii, he also won several tournaments at Portland Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Vivian Lebel Wing; three children, Christine Wing of Rumford, Michael Wing and his wife, Nancy McMahon Wing, of Yarmouth, and Jeffrey Wing and his wife, Nancy Cook Wing, of Pleasant Hill, Ore.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters, Gerald and Lawrence Wing, Thelma White, and Hilda Ames.
