SQUARE LAKE TOWNSHIP – The State Fire Marshal’s Office says a Caribou man died after a flash fire last weekend inside his ice fishing shack on Square Lake.
The body of 51-year-old Louis Berube was discovered Monday inside his fishing shack on Square Lake in northern Aroostook County. Fire investigators said Berube died from smoke inhalation. They say the cause of the fire was likely a leak from a propane stove or heater inside the shack.
Berube’s body was discovered about noon on Monday by members of another ice fishing party. Using snowmobiles and a plane, the Maine Warden Service transported a state trooper and a fire marshal investigator to the site near the outlet to Eagle Lake.
Berube had been fishing alone on Saturday, and investigators think the fire probably took place either Saturday or Sunday.
