LEWISTON – People considering purchasing buildings with residential rental units or current owners who are interested in enhancing their skills and knowledge are encouraged to attend a course titled “The Fundamentals of Landlording,” presented by Coastal Enterprises Inc.

The course will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at CEI’s AmeriCorps and YouthBuild Program Offices (formerly American Legion Post 22), 190 Bates St.

The course will cover tenant issues, including applications, screening and reference checks, fair housing, leases vs. tenancies at will, security deposits, eviction procedures; and building issues, including property maintenance and repairs, health and safety, budgeting, bookkeeping and managing expenses.

Attendance satisfies Maine Housing Authority requirements for participation in its New Neighbors loan program, which facilitates the purchase and rehabilitation of small-scale rental properties by owner occupants.

The course is limited to 30 participants. Register in advance by calling CEI’s Housing Department at 882-7552, ext. 174. The $15/person or $20/couple (co-buyer) fee charged at the door covers the cost of written materials and handouts. Walk-in registrations are accepted while space is available.

CEI is a nonprofit, community development corporation that provides a wide range of financing, flexible lending, equity capital and diversified counseling in development of small businesses, community facilities and affordable housing.
