I feel compelled to write after reading the Sun Journal recent article titled “Schools get new aid figures” (Feb. 3).
As I’ve told the reporter and the editor, and as reported in the Sun Journal, I passed a joint order charging the Education Committee with reviewing EPS and reporting out legislation by March 15. The headline should have added the word “tentative.”
The Sun Journal failed to report that the Western Maine (Androscoggin and Oxford counties) Superintendents Association voted unanimously to remove EPS from L.D. 1 and have it reviewed by the Education Committee.
The committee is now doing that, and will be holding a public hearing in the near future. Every rural community listed in the article stands to gain more school funding money when equity is restored to this new EPS model.
The Sun Journal should report all of the current work being done on school funding in Augusta.
