PORTLAND – Lee Kent Foster, known to his friends as the Wizard, was born on March 8, 1958 in Lewiston. He came into this life prematurely and left it early as well, after a bravely fought battle with colon cancer.

He grew up in Auburn, with his parents Helen and Kent Foster, his sisters, dog, Shelly and cat, Penny. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1976, and went on to graduate from the University of Maine at Orono in 1981. He later obtained an additional degree in music from the University of Southern Maine.

He taught music at Brewer High School for a number of years before his love of Portland brought him to this area, where he taught music from kindergarten to high school in various locations before finding his home as director of music at Gray-New Gloucester High School. He made a difference in many kids’ lives through band, jazz band, chorus, and other musical avenues. He played brass instruments, mainly euphonium, with countless performance groups, including the Casco Bay Band.

He was a much loved uncle to his nephew, Greg, and niece, Lindsay, who enjoyed squirt gun fights and days swimming at the lake with their “special” uncle. He loved kayaking, camping, skiing, gardening, working on his house, science fiction, computers, and drinking beer at Rosie’s or the Bear, with his many friends. He will be remembered by all for his sharp sense of humor. He was a friend you could count on and kind to all.

He will be missed by his sisters, Kaye, and Laurie Foster and her family, nephew and niece, Greg and Lindsay Giebel, and brother-in-law Kevin Giebel; his loving and devoted friend, Sharon O’Quinn; his closest friends, Barry Stemm, Mark “Rogie” Vachon, Jeff Roberts, and the rest of the “derelicts”; his uncle and aunt, Sandy and Dotty Hayman; and his cousins.
