PORTLAND – A simple, awkward first date evolves into an evening of revelation and self-discovery in “What Happened Was …,” a dark romantic comedy presented by Mad Horse Theatre Company through Feb. 27.

The play by playwright and filmmaker Tom Noonan is the story of Michael, a paralegal bent on tearing down a corrupt legal system, and Jackie, an executive assistant with a passion for song lyrics. They are co-workers engaged in the complications and terror of mutual attraction. The play takes place over the course of dinner.

This play deals with the difficulties of “meeting someone new and struggling to connect in a meaningful way,” said director Andy Sokoloff. “The play delves deeply into our need for love and understanding, and our fear that life is passing us by. It’s a raw, honest story beautifully told.”

Shows are Thursday 7:30 p.m., Friday 8, Saturday 8 and Sunday 7. Tickets are $16, with some discount shows: buy-one, get-one-free on Thursday, Feb. 17 and Feb. 24; and “pay what you can,”Sunday, Feb. 13 and Feb. 20. The Theater is at 25A Forest Ave. For more information, call 730-2389.
