NORWAY – A sport utility vehicle that broke partway through the ice on Penneseewassee Lake had rescue workers driving in circles Thursday afternoon.

Norway police and PACE ambulance responded to the report, but had difficulty finding the vehicle. They were forced to rely on the help of passing snowmobilers to get access to the northwestern side of the lake.

Karl Berriault and Josiah Cushman of Paris were snowmobiling with Steve Cushman of Norway when they were stopped by rescue workers, who asked for assistance in finding the vehicle and its passengers.

“The paramedics actually flagged us down and asked us to go out on the lake,” Berriault said.

Berriault said the four people made it out of the sport utility vehicle unharmed. Only one front tire had broken through the ice.

Steve Cushman said the vehicle was located near a set of lake islands about a half-mile in from the northwestern end of the lake, off Greenwood Road.

A Maine Warden Service officer who investigated was unavailable to provide details.
