Dear Sun Spots: I need the help of all you old GIs. I would like the recipe for something I had in the military. It was called S.O.S. or chipped beef. I have been out of the service for 40 years and have tried it everywhere. Nowhere can compare. It is not sausage or shaved steak. – Dennis Whitmore, Lewiston.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, it appears you are looking for dried beef. Sun Spots would recommend you check some camping stores for this. In addition, hopefully you will enjoy the following recipe:
Creamed chipped beef. Ingredients: 1 package/jar (4 ounces) dried beef, 2 tablespoons butter, ¼ cup chopped onion, 1 can (10¾ ounces) condensed cream of celery soup, 1/3 cup water, 1 cup evaporated milk, 1/8 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Method: Pull the dried beef apart, tearing into small pieces. If the beef is very salty, rinse first in warm water, then drain well. Melt butter over low heat in a medium saucepan. Add onion and cook until tender. Add beef and cook gently until edges curl. Blend in the soup, water, evaporated milk and Worcestershire. Heat through, but do not boil. Serve over buttered toast or baked potatoes. Serves 4.
