LISBON FALLS – Lewis Alfred Hunnewell, 79, a resident of High Street, died early Friday, Feb. 11, at his home.
He was born in Durham, May 6, 1925, the son of Grover and Catherine (Neal) Hunnewell and was a 1943 graduate of Edward Little High School.
On Nov. 11, 1947, he married the former Vida N. (Wilkinson) in Auburn.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was among the first of the replacements to land on the Normandy beaches during the D-Day invasion.
Following the war and his return to the U.S., he was employed for 35 years as a telephone repairman for AT&T in the town of Lisbon and surrounding communities.
He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Lisbon Falls for 45 years, The Lisbon Lodge 155 AF & AM, was a 32nd degree Scottish rite Mason, and was a member of the Kora Shrine Temple of Lewiston.
He enjoyed tinkering and repairing small engines and was known locally for fixing dead lawn mowers. He was an avid outdoorsman having enjoyed fishing and hunting. He looked forward every spring to the large vegetable garden he planted for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years of Lisbon Falls; one son, Randall L. Hunnewell and his companion, Michael Berrier, of Litchfield; five brothers, James Hunnewell and his wife, Carol, Walter Hunnewell and his wife, Freda, and John Hunnewell and his wife, Adele, of Auburn, George Hunnewell and his wife, Carol, of Windham, and Frank Hunnewell and his wife, Cynthia, of Durham; one sister, Mrs. Clifford (Beatrice) Libby of New Gloucester; and one granddaughter, Ms. Rebecca Ingram of Litchfield. He also raised a niece and a nephew as his own, Eilleen Potvin of Harpswell and Ben Wilkinson of Boulder City, Nev.
