Thousands of Central Maine Power customers without power were still Friday night after a major snowstorm Thursday.

Kevin House, a communications center supervisor for the power company, said 7,200 customers in the Bridgton Service District, which includes Norway, were still without power at 9 p.m. Friday.

About 47,400 Central Maine customers were affected by the storm throughout the company’s 11,000-square-mile territory in the state, House said. By 9 p.m. that number had dropped to 19,932.

Hardest hit was the Bridgton area with 7,200; Alfred area, 5,700; Brunswick area, 2,200; and Lewiston area 1,200.

In Norway, many camps and homes off side roads near Pennesseewassee Lake were affected.

House said this is due, in part, to the fact that people don’t cut trees near the lake. Thursday’s heavy snow, coupled with high winds, caused tree limbs to fall cross wires in several such areas.

Norway Town Manager David Holt expressed concern about the outages.

“It’s times like these you become more aware of the needs some folks might have for oxygen, things like that,” he said. “Nowadays, some people don’t have wood-fired heat to backup electric heat.”

Holt urged neighbors to check in on one another and said people experiencing storm-related problems can call town hall for assistance at 743-6651.
