Money is scarce here now. A peck of potatoes is the smallest change. These used to pass for a nickel, but they are only worth a postage stamp now and the mail carrier won’t take them at that.

The new annex of the St. Peter’s Church was opened yesterday for the first time. The first mass was said at 6 A. M., Sunday. About thirteen hundred people were present. The annex is lighted with both gas and electricity.

50 Years Ago, 1955

• Lewiston police are investigating a fruit cake theft. It was reported to police over the weekend that someone, believed to be a child, broke into the M. and M. Bakery distribution warehouse at 777 Main St., and left the place in some disarray. According to the police report, cakes and pastries were strewn about and two fruit cakes in metal containers were missing.

• Bath – Police said today a 500-pound safe, containing at least $1,000 cash and $500 in watches and jewelry, was stolen early today from the Sagadahoc Supermarket. The break was discovered shortly after last midnight and police said it apparently had been effected within an hour.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Love is in the air today – you can smell it, taste it, and even see it. And area businesses that sell flowers, candies and cards are very happy. Sales, they say, are even better than lose of last year. Although inflation seems to have hit all items, stores owners explain that price “is of no object on Valentine’s Day.”

“It’s the biggest day of the year. We have an awful lot of work to do, but I can’t complain – it’s much better than other years,” commented Richard Small, owner of Roak the Florist, 245 Center St., Auburn. He noted that a dozen long-stemmed red roses are going for $25 – it costs $2.25 for one red rose. Florists point out that increased heating costs have pushed up the price of the flowers.
