BANGOR (AP) – More than 100 members of a Maine Army National Guard unit returned home Sunday after spending nearly a year in Iraq.
The 152nd Field Artillery battalion flew into Bangor from Fort Dix, N.J., where the troops completed active duty paperwork and underwent debriefings.
Shortly after their arrival, battalion members were reunited with their families at a celebration at the Bangor Civic Center.
The artillery unit was retrained for military police duty. In Iraq, the troops served as guards at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison following reports that detainees were abused there. The Waterville-based unit was later split into two groups for detainee operations in different parts of Iraq.
