State police were investigating an incident in West Paris Sunday night that left two men dead.

Police were at the Sumner Road – Route 219 – scene late Sunday night. The state’s portable crime lab and state police detectives were on their way to the Oxford County town.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland said initially that “Two men were stabbed. One is dead; one is being worked on by (emergency medical service) personnel.”

He later called the Sun Journal to report that the second victim had also died.

“One man was dead when state police arrived on scene,” McCausland said. “The second man was being worked on by EMS technicians. He also died.”

McCausland said that a woman was in the home at 45 Sumner Road when the incident unfolded.

“She was not hurt,” McCausland said, but was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway for observation.

McCausland said police aren’t searching for a suspect in the case. That could indicate that the victims may have wounded each other.

“State police will be working this case all night,” McCausland said shortly after 11:30 p.m.. “I don’t expect to have additional information until tomorrow morning.”

McCausland said police responded to a 911 emergency call made to Oxford County dispatchers just before 10 p.m.

Oxford County sheriff’s deputies were the first to respond to the crime scene and secured the rural site pending the arrival of troopers.

They described the call as a “10-49” – a possible homicide – and called for state police to respond.

State police take the lead on homicide investigations in Maine, except in Bangor and Portland.

Deputies at the scene told dispatchers “both subjects are unconscious at the very least” and called for PACE and Tri-Town ambulance services to respond. A LifeFlight of Maine air ambulance was asked to respond, but was canceled only minutes away from a landing zone set up by West Paris volunteer firefighters.
