MINOT – School Committee Chairman Colleen Quint asked school administrators Tuesday night for help collecting information the town needs in order to prepare a new comprehensive plan.

Quint said that comprehensive plan committee member Candace Benwitz is seeking enrollment figures at the Minot Consolidated School for the past 15 years, and a list of the school’s capital improvement needs.

Board members noted that one major project that was discussed just over a year ago was a full-sized gymnasium, which would include a stage for performing arts and which could double as a setting for community meetings and events.

Quint pointed out that, in more recent discussions, it was determined that such a facility might be developed at a town rather than a school facility. In either case, it likely would be located near the school.

School Superintendent Nina Schlikin said it appears the new building for Union 29’s central offices will be ready to move into late next week. The union’s new offices will be in a building on Maine Street, Route 26, in Poland adjacent to Poland’s Public Works complex.

Assistant Superintendent Bill Doughty told the committee that he had received a letter from the Minot Education Association indicating a readiness to begin contract negotiations at any time. Negotiators for the administration include School Committee members Larry Bates and Colleen Quint, as well as Doughty.

Principal Margaret Pitts told the committee that representatives for the parent-organized Summer Recreation Program have presented a formal proposal to use school facilities again this summer.

According to organizer Lisa Cesare, the program served 45 youngsters during its initial year last summer, and intends to serve no more than 50 this summer.

Pitts also reported that the student council had initiated and carried out a coin drive that raised $2,363 for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami. Quint considered the effort extraordinarily successful and thought the students deserved high praise.

Quint also recognized fellow committee member Christopher Woodford for his dedicated service in the past three years. The evening marked Woodford’s last regular meeting, as he is not running for re-election in March.
