PORTLAND (AP) – Kirk Daubenspeck stopped 41 shots en route to his third shutout of the season as the Portland Pirates edged the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 1-0 Thursday in the AHL.

The Pirates (21-24-3-4) took an early lead and Daubenspeck’s sparkling goaltending made the one-goal margin stand.

Owen Fussey netted the only goal of the game 1:02 into the first period. The Penguins (26-15-5-6) mounted a spirited offense and outshot the Pirates 41-16, but Daubenspeck made the big saves at the key moments.

His best effort was stopping Maxime Talbot’s breakaway attempt 6:31 into the second period, and his save on Kris Beech’s close-in shot at 4:00 of the third was a crowd-pleaser.

The Pirates managed only one shot on goal in the second period.

Penguins goalie Dany Sabourin made 15 saves in the loss.
