SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – Brian Eklund stopped 42 shots, including 31 in the third period and overtime, as the Springfield Falcons beat the Portland Pirates 3-2 in a shootout.

Adam Henrich and Nikita Alexeev scored during the shootout, while Brian Eklund held Portland scoreless on all four of their shootout attempts.

The Pirates tied the game with less than two minutes remaining, as Trent Whitfield scored his 11th of the season at 18:06 on a power play.

The Falcons had taken a 2-1 lead when Derek Bekar scored 15 seconds into the second period.

Springfield scored first on the power play as Ryan Craig tipped in Doug O’Brien’s shot from the left point.

Boyd Gordon tied the game for the Pirates at 11:20 of the second.
