LEWISTON – William F. Tompkins, 70, of 48 Academy St., Auburn, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 15, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Wellsville, N.Y., March 16, 1934, a son of Charles and Elizabeth (Burdeck) Tompkins and was educated in New York schools.

“Bill” was a military veteran having served in the Navy. When he got out of the service he moved to Massachusetts and later lived in New Hampshire for several years prior to moving to Auburn a year ago.

He worked more than 38 years as a boilermaker for Union Local 29 working in different mills throughout New England until his retirement in March of 1994.

He always enjoyed working with his hands and doing projects around the house. He especially loved building stone walls.

He leaves his wife, the former Ann Barrington, whom he married Sept. 18, 1999; five daughters, Sharon Tompkins of Wilmington, Mass., Sandra Fisher and husband, Mark, of Reading, Mass., Cynthia Bishop and husband, Gerald, of Wilmington, Mass., Nancy Green of Massachusetts, and Jessica Barrington of Auburn; two sons, William Tompkins Jr. of Woburn, Mass., and Michael Tompkins and wife, Danielle, of Medford, Mass.; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Clute of Dalton, N.Y., and Kate Cole of Sarasota, Fla.; and a brother, Richard Burdeck also of Sarasota, Fla.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Tompkins.
