FARMINGTON – A Canton man was sentenced to one-year in prison Friday after pleading guilty to escape in Franklin County Superior Court. A justice denied a request to stay the jail sentence until Monday.

Craig Tracy, 22, also pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and furnishing alcohol to a minor. A plea of no contest has the same effect as a plea of guilty as far as the criminal sentence is concerned, but may not be considered as an admission of guilt for any other purpose.

Justice Joseph Jabar sentenced Tracy to a one-year sentence for the assault charge and six months for the alcohol charge. Both are concurrent with the escape sentence.

Tracy had been under house arrest July 31, wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet when he left his Maxwell Road apartment in Jay without permission from the Franklin County monitoring authority.

Tracy had 22 days left on a previous six-month sentence for burglary of a motor vehicle when he left the residence after an incident that involved an argument with a teenage girl.

Initially, Tracy was arrested on gross sexual assault but state prosecutors didn’t press that charge after evidence was reviewed.

Instead, he was indicted on charges of escape, aggravated assault, assault, tampering with a witness, furnishing alcohol to a minor, furnishing a place for a minor to consume alcohol, sexual abuse of a minor and criminal restraint.

All but three of the charges were dropped in the negotiated agreement made between the state and Tracy.

Other conditions in the agreement include no contact with the victim, anger management screening and to follow recommendations. Tracy will also serve a previous ordered probation on another crime after he is released from the Department of Corrections.
