RUMFORD – Selectmen gave the green light Thursday to the River Valley Riders ATV Club to use trails on town land.

The trails, also used and maintained by the local snowmobile club, are near the town garage on Route 2 and on a portion of the land surrounding Abbott Farm Plaza, which the town owns.

Bill Morse, president of the club, said about 50 of the club’s 265 members are from Rumford. The club already has permission to use trails in several nearby towns, he said. The ATV club generally stops using the trails during the winter months and during the mud season, he added.

Permission was granted pending proof of liability insurance.

If the town should sell the Abbott Farm Plaza property, Selectman Jolene Lovejoy said the ATV club would have to get permission to continue using the land from the new owners.

The board also awarded the contract for building a wooden, sectional table to be used by selectmen during board meetings to Belanger Building and Remodeling of Rumford at a cost of $2,850.

Town Manager Steve Eldridge said plans are to begin holding regular selectmen’s meetings in the Municipal Building auditorium within a month or so.

“You have a historic space upstairs and we want something to fit it,” he said.

He said holding board meetings in the auditorium will also provide more space for residents who want to attend.

In other matters, Eldridge said the town and River Valley Growth Council’s bid to establish a call center in the area by L.L. Bean didn’t make the first cut.

Eldridge announced that just over $1,300 was raised during a performance of town-sponsored, “The Merry Wives of Windsor” last month. The money will go toward the relief fund for victims of the December tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

Selectmen voted to donate $230 for one Mountain Valley High School boy to attend Dirigo Boys State.

Meetings to hear requests for initiated articles, as part of the 2005-06 municipal budget development process, were set for March 15 and March 22.
