DOVER, N.H. (AP) – A Superior Court judge has denied a confessed murderer’s request for a trial.
James Covington of Somersworth, who pleaded guilty to killing his former girlfriend six years ago, argues his lawyer and the trial judge did not handle his case fairly.
Instead of having a trial, Covington pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the strangulation of Debra Duncan of Somersworth in 1999. He was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison in a plea agreement.
Afterward, Covington tried unsuccessfully to withdraw his plea, and Superior Court Judge Peter Fauver rejected the latest request, saying Covington never had a trial, so he can’t ask for a new trial.

The Attitash Resort in Bartlett is auctioning April Fourth to the highest bidder. The auction winner will receive what amounts to a private ski area for the day for 100 people.
“I can’t think of a better family reunion or staff party,” said Attitash Vice President John Urdi.
The online auction opened Monday on eBay and will continue until March 3.
The date up for bid is the day after the area closes to the public.

ATKINSON, N.H. (AP) – A New Hampshire woman headed for a sunny winter getaway packed more than swimsuits and sandals.
Sue Lippens stuffed two suitcases full with children’s sneakers for her holiday in Costa Rica. The Atkinson businesswoman started a sneaker drive after hearing about foot problems many orphans develop because they don’t have proper shoes.
Lippens heard that the orphans’ lack of shoes caused fallen arches and tendinitis. She canvassed local businesses for donations. The response was so great that family members following her on vacation are also packing suitcases full of donated shoes.
The shoes will go to Las Manas orphanage in Golfito, Costa Rica.
