FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington will celebrate Women’s History Month with its annual “Women in History” banquet Thursday, March 3, in North Dining Hall of Olsen Student Center at UMF.
Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a lecture afterward. The public is welcome to attend. Traditional or creative black tie is welcome.
The guest speaker will be visiting Libra Professor Momin Rahman. In his presentation, “In Search of My Mother’s Garden: Reflections of a Faithful Son,” Rahman will discuss personal experiences of transformation in migration, identity and gender for Muslin women in Britain.
Rahman is a lecturer at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland, and he has published extensively on gender and sexuality. Two of his recent works include “Sexuality and Democracy: Identities and Strategies in Lesbian and Gay Politics” and “What Really Matters? The elusive quality of the material in feminist thought.”
Rahman earned a doctorate in sociology and a degree in politics from the University of Strathclyde.
The banquet and talk are open to the public. Tickets are $12 and are available at Mickey’s Hallmark and Calico Patch in Farmington, as well as by calling the UMF Women’s Studies Center at 778-7387. The event is sponsored by the University of Maine Farmington’s Women’s Studies Program with assistance from the Libra Fund.
