LEWISTON – Dorothy J. “Dot” Sweatt, 91, of Farmington, died Monday Feb. 21, at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, only four days following the death of her husband, Wendell A. “Chet” Sweatt.
She was born Sept. 24, 1913, in Auburn, a daughter of Clarence and Alice Jordan. She received her education in Auburn schools, Farmington Normal School, and earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Maine, Orono.
For many years she was a dedicated subprimary school teacher in the Farmington schools. She later was employed at the University of Maine at Farmington and the CAP Agency in East Wilton, focusing on early childhood education and daycare facilities throughout the County. The Sweatt-Winter Day Care Center at UMF, established in 1975, was named in her honor, for her dedication to generations of children in the Franklin County area. She never lost sight of the needs of local children, and continued, until very recently, to volunteer her time by telling stories and reading to the children at Sweatt-Winter.
Mrs. Sweatt was a former member of the Old South Congregational Church. She shared, with her husband, an interest in collecting, selling and trading antiques. Her specialty was glassware. They also enjoyed their Friday night card games; her favorite was bridge. She was also a member of the Monday Group. In her retirement, she traveled extensively with her husband throughout the United States and Europe.
She is survived by their son, Gary Sweatt of Farmington, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wendell A. “Chet” Sweatt; and a sister, Arline Ellingwood.
