JAY – The state is starting preliminary design for the future replacement of Allen Brook Bridge on Riley Road and is seeking comments on the project before proceeding.
The project is estimated to cost about $250,000, with a $185,000 of that estimated for construction, said project manager Ben Foster of the Department of Transportation. The project is scheduled for the summer of 2006.
The existing bridge on the road leading to International Paper is near the town’s river monitor building. The bridge is in poor condition and considered structurally deficient, Foster said.
The department has evaluated the best and most cost efficient way to replace the bridge, and plans to do a slip-line project of the existing culvert, Foster said. A smaller pipe would be put in the existing culvert and grouted in place.
The advantage of doing it that way, he said, is it would cost less and allow traffic to flow in one lane. Otherwise, the project would cost about $750,000 and the road would have to be closed to traffic until the project is completed, Foster said.
A formal public hearing will not be held for the project.
Anyone wanting to inquire about the work or comment on it may call Foster at (207) 624-3423 or write to the attention of Ben Foster, Maine Department of Transportation, Urban and Federal Bridge Program, 16 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0016.
