MEXICO – The town’s annual report will be dedicated to longtime former Selectman Louise Waterhouse.

Selectmen voted unanimously Wednesday night to honor Waterhouse, who died unexpectedly on Feb. 10, 2004. She had served on the board since 1994.

“She worked exceedingly hard for the town and cared about the taxpayers and their money,” board Chairman Arthur Bordeau said Thursday. “She gave a lot to the town and this will be dedicated to her memory.”

Waterhouse filled out a term begun by former Town Manager Joseph Derouche. She was then elected and re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2003.

Waterhouse would often give her opinion, even if it wasn’t aligned with the rest of the board members.

“She was not afraid to be odd man out in voting,” Town Clerk Penny Duguay said.

Besides serving the town as a selectman, Waterhouse also helped to get the annual community festival, Fiesta del Rio, off the ground. That eventually evolved into Friends of the Mexico Library. She volunteered at the food pantry at the Mexico Congregational Church and was a longtime member of the Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste board and the Med-Care Ambulance board.

The annual reports will be available just prior to the town meeting in June.

In other matters on Wednesday, residents were reminded that the second half of property tax bills is due by 4 p.m. Friday, March 4.

Town Manager John Madigan said a 6.5 percent annual interest rate will be assessed to any payments made after that date.

The board also appointed Selectman Reggie Arsenault to the town’s general seat on the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments board. He will join Madigan, who was appointed earlier this month to a seat on AVCOG’s executive board.
