ORONO – Brent Shepheard found the back of the net at the 19:33 mark of the first period for the only goal Maine needed in a 2-0 win over the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in men’s hockey action Friday evening.
Shepheard’s goal was assisted by Michel Leveille and Steve Mullin.
The Black Bears (17-10-6) were leading 1-0 when Rob Bellamy converted a relay from Billy Ryan and Keenan Hopson with 3:13 remaining in regulation for a little cushion down the stretch. Goaltender John Yaros made 32 saves for the River Hawks (19-8-4), while Jimmy Howard earned the shutout with 27 saves for Maine.
Women’s basketball
St. Joe’s 71, Mitchell 51
STANDISH – Laura Pelkey poured in 22 points as St. Joseph’s sailed to a 71-51 win over Mitchell College in women’s basketball action Friday.
Margaret Blauvelt recorded 14 points, while Val Dumais tallied 10 points for the Monks (15-11). Pelkey registered six 3-pointers in the contest. Shayna Barnes led Mitchell (8-14) with 12 points, and Gina DeRosier chipped in with 10 points in the losing effort.
USM 81, Rhode Island 47
GORHAM – Junior forward Ashley Marble rustled up a game-high 21 points as the University of Southern Maine rolled to an 81-47 win over Rhode Island College in the semifinals of the LEC tournament on Friday at Warren G. Hill Gymnasium.
The Huskies (25-2) nailed 60 percent from the field in the first half to take a daunting 47-22 lead into the half. Marble scored 17 of her 21 points in the first half and shot an impressive 77 percent from the field overall.
Junior guard Donna Cowing came off the bench to score 15 points, while junior guard Katie Frost and junior forward Megan Myles of Auburn tallied 11 points apiece for Southern Maine.
Rhode Island (11-16) was paced by Brittany Rosen and Kristy Nix, scoring 10 points apiece.
With the win, the top-seeded Huskies advance to the championship game of the tournament and will face third-seeded Keene State College Owls today at 4 p.m.
Men’s basketball
New Jersey City 79, St. Joseph’s 52
STANDISH – Sanni Ojibara came off the bench to drain 25 points and lift New Jersey City University to a 79-52 win over St. Joseph’s in men’s basketball action Friday.
New Jersey (17-9) received solid offense from several players. Mark Washington contributed 11 points, while James Kaiser tallied nine. Devin James and Antoinne Morgano pitched in with eight points apiece.
The Monks (15-11) were supported primarily by Jon Pratt and Noah LaRoche with 21 and 12 points, respectively.
