LISBON – The new Lisbon Community School on Mill Street will host its first major event, the District III Jazz Festival, from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the cafetorium.

Participating schools are Mt. Ararat Middle School, Topsham; Brunswick Middle School and Brunswick High School; Troy Howard Middle School, Belfast; Cony High School, Augusta; Oak Hill High School, Wales; and Philip W. Sugg Middle School, Lisbon.

Junior and high school jazz bands will perform as well as vocal groups. The festival takes place at a different school each year. Performances will be evaluated, and must attain certain criteria in order to qualify for participation in the State Jazz Festival, Judd said.

The District III festival was to have been held at the Philip W. Sugg Middle School, but the location was changed due to flooding inside the school. Pipes burst during a power outage on Feb. 14. Although repairs are now being made, organizers were concerned they would not be completed in time for the festival, said band director and festival coordinator Ed Judd.
