A few years ago, the state of Maine was having a hoopla because the Legislature had spent money from the retirement fund for teachers and state workers.

The result was an amendment to the state constitution that prevents the Legislature from touching that fund. It takes it off the table.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud has proposed a similar amendment for the U.S. Constitution. This would protect and save Social Security forever. Unfortunately the Republicans, because they are in power, will not allow his proposal to be discussed.

Some Republicans are for an amendment that would take away a civil right for a segment of the population that they don’t happen to like. But they will not consider an amendment that would safeguard the financial well-being of most of the country.

I just cannot fathom that being allowed to happen in what is supposed to be a democracy.
