REDINGTON TOWNSHIP – Maine land use regulators are scheduled Wednesday to consider an appeal of staff approval for meteorological testing poles in Redington Township.

The Land Use Regulation Commission plans to hear the appeal between 2 and 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at Baxter State Park Authority Headquarters in Millinocket.

In January, the agency approved a permit allowing two weather poles to remain on Redington Pond Range in Franklin County.

Redington Mountain Windpower LLC wants to build a wind farm on the Redington Mountain range and Black Nubble Mountain in the future and plans to continue to gather weather data with the equipment.

An initial permit for the meteorological poles was granted in 1994.

Dain Trafton, a Phillips resident, has appealed the staff’s decision to allow the poles and to set only $7,500 as an assurance that the poles will be removed when the permit expires.

Trafton believes the assurance deposit should be more than $20,000, according to Land Use Regulation Commission documents.

The commission’s staff, which believes the $7,500 is adequate, is recommending the appeal be denied.
