LEWISTON – Mary E. Douglas, 66, of Pittston, died on Feb. 28, at St. Mary’s Hospital, with her family by her side, after a lifetime of battling many illnesses.

She was born on April 27, 1938, in Gardiner, the daughter of the late Walter and Elsie (Spencer) Lessner. She attended Damariscotta schools and Lincoln Academy.

She was a member of the Golden Years Senior Citizens of Monmouth and the North Monmouth Community Church. Her biggest joy and love in life was her daughter, who died in a car accident in 1995. She cared for her husband, Elwyn Douglas, and when he went blind, she obtained her driver’s license. They took many trips to Bailey’s Island so he could hear the waves and smell the salt air. After Elwyn’s death, she moved from North Monmouth to Pittston to be nearer her siblings.

She is survived by her siblings, a brother, Linwood Lessner and his wife, Rita, of West Gardiner, June Hussiere of Richmond, and Ruth Riopell of Pittston; and a stepson, Kenneth Douglas of Bristol, Tenn. She is also survived by Tammi Harlow, whom she helped raise and thought of as a daughter, as well as three nephews; a niece; and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Naomia Staples; her parents; her first husband, Harold Staples; and her second loving husband, Elwyn Douglas.
