This is in response to Dr. Walworth’s letter of Feb. 19 on the use of helmets. Using motorcycle racers who wear helmets was a poor example. NASCAR drivers wear helmets also. Should we all have to wear helmets while driving cars?

Who ordained him my keeper?

This is America. I can choose to protect my life any way that I see fit. We are granted life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These rights end only when they interfere with someone else’s rights to the same.

Waivers can be used exempting liability if helmets or seat belts are not used. This is solely a matter between the insurance provider and the individual. Nowhere in the Constitution does it state that we have to provide care for others.

Why stop at helmet laws? How about fining people who are obese and refuse to exercise? How about fining obese people every time they eat fast food? Hasn’t this epidemic become America’s leading cause of death?

Where does it stop?

Personal views belong in the editorial pages of the paper, they should never be used to usurp the freedoms of others.

This may seem like a small, insignificant fight for individual rights, but the battle starts here.
