BRYANT POND – Howard Austin MacKillop, 80, of Bryant Pond, died at his residence Wednesday, March 2.

He was born in Elliot on Sept. 5, 1924. He was adopted by the Rev. James and Merle MacKillop at the age of three, and came to Woodstock at the age of nine. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1943, joined the United States Marine Corps the same year, and served in Guam and Okinawa. While in Okinawa, he was wounded in action in May of 1945, receiving the Purple Heart.

He married Arlene Swan on April 7, 1946.

Howard was a very active deacon at the Bryant Pond Baptist Church.

He owned and operated Clark & MacKillop’s store in Bryant Pond for 15 years, selling the store in 1961. He worked as manager of New England Furniture in Norway for five years; and was personnel manager at DeCoster Egg Farms of Turner, and later worked as a direct support professional for adults with disabilities for the state of Maine for 12 years.

He loved to travel and socialize, and was especially fond of animals, especially his cows.

He was a member of the American Legion of Locke Mills.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years; five sons, Paul MacKillop and his wife, Claudia, of Sumner, Gregory MacKillop and his wife, Nancy, of Bryant Pond, Timothy MacKillop and his wife, Linda, of Bryant Pond, Duffy Ellsworth and his wife, Melanie, of Bryant Pond, and Brian Ellsworth and his wife, Kimberly, of Rhode Island; four daughters, Bonnie York and her husband, Donald, of Dixmont, Susan Ellsworth of Lewiston, Wanda Morrow and her husband, Philip, of Otisfield, and Vickie Morton and her husband, Eric, of Rumford Point; Tina, Danny and Paula Phelps; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Fred Clark; one sister, Thelma McDowell; and one son, Neil MacKillop.
