50 Years Ago, 1955

The Pepperell Manufacturing Co. has notified the Lewiston Board of Mayor and Aldermen it is making arrangements to have improvements made to the steam stack at its Lisbon Street plant to prevent steam from blowing across the highway. The aldermen recently notified the firm it had received complaints that steam coming from the vent, particularly in frigid weather, covers the highway and creates a traffic condition.

Hunting a fishing enthusiasts, resident and non-resident alike, are on their way to higher Maine license fees barring a Legislative upset. A proposed increase in almost all classes of hunting and fishing licenses – roughly 25 percent – was approved by the Legislative Committee on Inland Fisheries and Game and the committee’s report was accepted by the House today.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Seafood lovers will still have to pay a high price, but trawlers from as far away as Louisiana and Florida are taking advantage of the discovery of rich scallop beds off the coast of Maine. “No one has ever hit areas like they’re hitting out there now,” said Fred J. Merrill of the P. J. Merrill fish company. Dozens of boats that normally fish the waters around New Bedford, Mass., the traditional center of New England’s scallop industry, are now fishing areas 10 to 40 miles offshore in Jeffrey’s Basin, stretching from Cape Elizabeth to near the Isles of Shoals. Fishermen are finding choice scallops, measuring three to four inches. Off the boat, they scallops are selling for about $4 a pound.
