MIAMI, FLA. – John P. Poirier, 82, died March 1, in Miami, Fla. He resided in Naples, Fla. for the past five years, after being a resident of Quincy, Mass. for 46 years.

Born in Rumford, Nov. 17, 1922, he was a son of John and Flora (Tousignant) Poirier. He graduated from Stephen’s High School in Rumford in 1941 and attended State School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. He worked for a short time at the Rumford Falls Times, prior to going to Boston, where he worked as a compositor for the Boston Globe Newspaper for over 49 years, until his retirement Aug. 30, 1999.

He was a member of the American Legion and VFW in Quincy, Mass., and the Naval Mine Warfare Association. He attended the United Baptist Church in Peru and was a member of the Grace Bible Church in Naples, Fla.

He was married in Wahpeton, N.D. on Jan. 15, 1947, to Ruth Hutchen Scrone, who survives him of Naples, Fla. Other survivors include his children, William P. Poirier and his wife, Yuki, of China, Elizabeth Burke and her husband, David, of Broomall, Pa. and Gerald J. and his wife, Giselda, of Roswell, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
