LEWISTON – An Auburn man arrested last week in connection with a string of thefts in a half-dozen cities is back behind bars.

Brian Foster, 51, was arrested Saturday at his Chicoine Avenue home on a charge of violating the conditions his bail, police said.

Police say he tried to buy a guitar and amplifier at Music Mania in Lewiston on Friday. As a condition of his bail, Foster was barred from going into any retail store without the supervision of another adult, said Sgt. Reilly Bryant, a detective for the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. Foster was out on bail after being charged last week with six counts of theft.

Police say he stole everything from a a cup of coffee to a snowmobile from stores in Lewiston, Auburn, Wales, Freeport, South Portland and Kittery.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s officials got involved in the investigation Feb. 22, when a caller from Reggie’s Kawasaki and Ski-Doo in Wales reported a man had made off with a snowmobile and trailer.

As part of their investigation, police took inventory of the items in Foster’s house and contacted the stores where they were from to make sure they weren’t stolen. Music Mania was one of the stores on the list.

The store manager recognized Foster’s name when he tried to use his credit card Friday to buy $2,300 worth of music equipment. Foster left after the card was declined, then the manager contacted police, Bryant said.
