After four years of President Bush’s reign, I finally figured out how to decipher the phrase “Says what he means and means what he says.”

Following the trail of Bush’s statements and comparing them to his actions proves that the only way to interpret his statements is to expect him to do the opposite of what he says. Some easy examples:

• “Grow economy” means tax cuts for those who already have all they need, rather than lower-income consumers who need a break.

• Osama bin Laden will be caught for Sept. 11 means topple Saddam Hussein.

• “Cut budget” means cuts only in programs he praises (VA, Head Start, etc.).

• “Searching for WMD” means growing democracy.

• “Curb deficits” means off-budget increases.

• “Save Social Security” means take out money for private accounts and pay for it off-budget.

• “Social Security not burdening young workers” means ignoring the huge deficits they’ll have to pay off.

• “Investing in America” means make it easier to send jobs abroad.

More examples are readily at hand.

As a believer in the Christian faith, I pray daily for deliverance from this deceiver’s advisers.

I actually think he believes what he’s told to say, and a lot of his supporters believe him, regardless of proof to the contrary.
