RUMFORD – Selectmen awarded the contract for the creation of 18 decorative signs to a Farmington company during a special meeting Monday afternoon.

Signworks Inc. will produce signs that will point people to the downtown area at a cost of $6,536.

Planned for installation at various points around town in late spring are two 4-by-8-foot wooden, oval-shaped signs with raised characters; eight 18-by-24-inch aluminum signs; and eight 6-by-18-inch aluminum signs.

The largest signs will be installed at the two main entrances to Rumford. They will highlight the historic architecture and history of the town and will include the Municipal Building cupola, scrollwork and other decorative images.

The smaller signs will point people to various services and shops on Congress and Waldo streets. An image of the cupola will be a part of every sign.

Selectman Jim Rinaldo and a group of residents formed an ad hoc committee several months ago to develop ideas that would help the downtown business area.

Town Manager Steve Eldridge had said at a previous meeting that funding for the custom work could come from the town’s economic development account, although that source has not yet been confirmed.

A funding source will be identified as the town develops its 2005-2006 operating budget.
