MADISON, Conn. (AP) – Five high school athletes have been arrested on charges they brought steroids back to school from a vacation in Mexico.
The students were suspended from Daniel Hand High School and face possible expulsion. Police said they expect at least one more arrest.
“I’m really confident this was a first-time whim for all of them,” police Sgt. Todd Curry said Wednesday. “They were down there and one kid happened to wander through one of the pharmacies and realized you could buy steroids over counter. When he did it, he told all his friends and it set off a chain reaction.”
Christopher O’Sullivan, 17, was charged Tuesday with possession of steroids with intent to sell. His brother, Ryan O’Sullivan, 16, was charged with possession and sale of steroids.
Jonathan Patrick Gorman, 16, was charged with possession of steroids.
Police did not identify two teens who were being charged as juveniles.
School Superintendent H. Kaye Griffin said the students have been members of Hand’s football, track and baseball teams. They have been suspended for 10 school days, the maximum allowed.
“They’re all young kids,” Curry said. “I think they were probably looking at people ahead of them, looking at their size and probably looking for a quick solution.”
Curry credited a teacher with spotting students with the drugs in school, which he said were in a Rolaids container.
“Some of them were consumed, but we’re confident we seized or accounted for most of them,” Curry said.
The three teens charged as adults are due in New Haven Superior Court on Tuesday. The possession charge carries up to a year in prison, while the sale charge carries up to seven years in prison.
Curry said the teens’ parents have been cooperative.
