LOCKE MILLS – The 86th birthday of the American Legion, which was organized in France at the end of World War I, will be celebrated on Thursday, March 17, by Jackson-Silver Post, American Legion.

A 6 p.m. potluck supper will be served with a birthday cake for dessert. A joint meeting of the post and unit will follow, after which both groups will break for their own meetings if there is business.

Last month, besides taking part in the Four Chaplains service at the Locke Mills church, valentines were taken to residents at the Western Maine Veterans Home and to nine veterans who reside at Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris.

Post members who have died recently are Louis Sicotte, Donald Morey and Howard MacKillop.

A nominating committee is seeking those who are interested in assuming office for the 2005-2006 year. Election of those officers is scheduled for April 21.

It is again time to accept applications for two scholarships of $300 each for students at Telstar Regional High School. Girls who are junior members of the Auxiliary will be given first preference, with other relatives of veterans considered next. Other girls may also apply.

It is also time for junior class girls who wish to attend Girls State to apply. Jamie Hastings at Telstar should be contacted concerning either of the above programs.

On May 22 members of the Second District will meet at Jackson-Silver Post for election of officers. The district is comprised of all posts and units in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties.

People have been asking when the monthly supper/dances will begin again at the Legion Hall. The starting date is April 12 when the chicken pie meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. and dancing will follow to music of the Richard Felt band until 9:30 p.m. There will be an increase in price to $7, $3.50 for those under age 12 which includes the meal and dance. The May 10 supper and dance will have the Parisians furnishing the music.

On May 14 there will be an indoor/outdoor flea market at the Legion Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a luncheon served at noon. Refreshments will be available throughout the sale. Anyone who wishes to donate items for the sale may do so, but there will also be tables for rent at $10 each for those who wish to sell their own items.
