RUMFORD – During the week of March 21, volunteers will be delivering daffodils to residents, schools, businesses and hospitals throughout the region as part of the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days. Local Hannaford stores will be offering direct sales, and all of the proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society.
A bouquet of daffodils may be obtained for $7, and a Gift of Hope, an anonymous daffodil bouquet in a vase for a cancer patient in a local hospital or nursing home, for a $20 contribution. The deadline for ordering daffodils in advance is Friday.
American Cancer Society programs that benefit from funds raised include: Road to Recovery, a program in which volunteers provide rides to people undergoing treatment; Hope Lodges, for those who need to temporarily relocate for cancer treatments; Look Good, Feel Better, a program in which trained volunteer cosmetologists assist women whose cancer treatments result in appearance-related side effects; and Reach to Recovery and Man to Man, two separate peer-support groups for breast cancer or prostate cancer patients.
The American Cancer Society’s toll-free information line, 800-ACS-2345, and Web site, www.cancer.org, are available 24 hours a day. They provide information about cancer and patient services.
In Maine, the American Cancer Society is currently funding two research scientists at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor with grants totaling more than $850,000.
