LEWISTON – Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Dudman of Auburn passed quietly on March 10, at Marshwood Nursing Home. Her husband, L. Henderson Dudman, predeceased her in 1995. They were long time residents of West Auburn, though she resided most recently at Schooner Estates in Auburn.

She was born Mary Elizabeth Vance on Nov. 1, 1919, in Winfield, Pa., to Helen (Withington VanAlen) and Sherwood William Vance. She is a 1937 graduate of the Seiler School in Harrisburg, Pa., and earned a bachelors degree in library science from Rutgers University in 1941.

Her early career was involved with the League of Nations. After moving to Maine in 1956, she became the assistant state librarian in Augusta, and circulation librarian at Bates College until she retired in 1988, as assistant librarian emerita.

She was an avid reader and bridge player, and was also always active in her community holding such positions as chairwoman of CMMC’s Women’s Hospital Association, a member of the High Street Congregational Church and a lifetime member of the Junior League of Harrisburg, Pa.

She is survived by her two children, Larry of Boston and Frances and husband, Andrew Straus, of Westfield, N.J.; two granddaughters, Laura and Ellen Straus; and a sister, Frances Victor of Leesburg, Fla.
