Dear Sun Spots: I am trying to find the Mint Julep candy that one could buy for a penny a piece back in the ’50s and ’60s. If you could locate any place that sells these or if there is anybody out there who knows, I would appreciate it. Also, I would like to find a cassette tape or CD of Dick Curless, “Tombstone Every Mile,” and wondered if anyone has a copy. I may be reached at (207) 224-7188. – Dick Higgins, Hartford.
Answer: According to The Squirrel Brand Co., Mint Julep candy, originally produced by Squirrel Brand, has not been available due to company ownership changes. Squirrel Brand was sold to Southern Style Nuts in February 1999. Both Squirrel Brand and Southern Style Nuts, together, were bought by new owners and renamed as The Squirrel Brand Co., which now produces and sells only nuts under both their company name and the Southern Style Nuts brands.
However, the good news is, Squirrel Brand’s candy making rights were acquired from The Squirrel Brand Co. by the New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) in January 2004. According to NECCO, by telephone interview, its has begun production of Mint Juleps and will begin distribution soon, making them available this April or May. For more information, you may contact NECCO by visiting its Web site at www.necco.com.

Answer: Sun Spots called Bayer’s Science Education Program Department, which said it is another company’s product, but did not state whose. Sun Spots welcomes responses from readers who may be familiar with which product this commercial is for, or better yet, the lyrics, if available.

Dear Sun Spots: Here is an easy and inexpensive way to eat the best doughnuts you can ever have:
Buy refrigerated Buttermilk Biscuits from your supermarket. You can buy them in packages of four, 10 biscuits to the can. Make a hole in center with an apple corer. Heat Butter Flavored Crisco to about 300 degrees in about 4 ” of oil. Do not overcook. Turn doughnuts over once or twice. Remove on to paper towels. Sprinkle with white sugar or powdered sugar. One can makes 10 doughnuts and 10 doughnut holes. Make more than one can at a time, as you can easily eat four or five at one time. I hope you like them as much as my grandkids do! Thank you. – R.A.C. Lewiston.
