WASHINGTON (AP) – A Congressional oversight committee will hold a hearing in Boston next month to review the ongoing problems with leaks in the walls and roof of the Big Dig tunnels.

The House Government Reform Committee will convene in Boston on April 22, at the request of Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch, the only Massachusetts lawmaker on the panel.

Last month, Department of Transportation Inspector General Kenneth Mead said he would not authorize the release of $81 million in federal funds for the Big Dig until he receives an accounting of the leaks and their repair costs.

Problems with leaks were publicly revealed last September, when water broke though a wall panel and flooded the northbound Interstate 93 tunnel. A subsequent review revealed hundreds of smaller leaks in the $14.6 billion system of tunnels under downtown Boston.
