NEW YORK (AP) – Former President Clinton began his first full day of recovery Friday from an operation to remove scar tissue and fluid that developed after his heart bypass surgery six months ago.

Clinton was expected to spend three to 10 days in New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, said Dr. Herbert Pardes, the hospital’s president.

Pardes said Thursday that doctors expected Clinton to be walking within 24 hours. The hospital and Clinton’s staff said no updates would be issued Friday.

Doctors described the operation as a low-risk procedure to relieve a problem that crops up in only a fraction of 1 percent of bypass cases.

Doctors said the combination of fluid and scar tissue had decreased Clinton’s left lung capacity by 25 percent. The former president first noticed the problem when he suffered shortness of breath during his daily 4-mile walk.
