FRYEBURG – A snowshoer found unconscious by a search team Wednesday is now alert, according to police.

Patrolman Richard Murray said Friday that Ryan Keller, 19, of 1585 Main St., awoke sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Murray said Keller on Friday was still at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where rescue teams took him after finding him about a mile from his home.

A nursing supervisor said Friday night that he was not listed as a patient.

Keller had gone out for a walk with his dog Wednesday, Murray said. His father called the police after Keller failed to return home when expected.

Keller was reported to have been suffering from severe hypothermia when found by Fryeburg rescue personnel. He was taken by snowmobile to the Fryeburg airport, where he was flown by helicopter to Lewiston.

“We don’t know if it was exhaustion or what,” Murray said.

He added that after waking up, Keller reported that the last thing he remembered Wednesday was watching the sun set.
