Recently, I testified before the state House and Senate Appropriations Committee in support of the Land for Maine’s Future program.

At first, my mom said we would be too busy to attend the hearing because my brothers were cross-country skiing, but I said, “Mom, what is more important, going to a ski race or saving the wild animals?”

I wanted the lawmakers to know that nature is important, and we need their help to protect it. Maine needs wild places for animals to live and for children to explore.

Last year, hundreds of people wrote stories about their special places in Maine. Some of the stories were published in a book called “Maine Voices.” My story took place in the woods, and I am glad that that place is protected.

I have read my story to lots of people. I learned that people in Maine care about these special places. It makes us happy to know that we can go out and be with the wildlife and enjoy this beautiful land.

Will those special places still be there when I grow up?

I guess it’s up to the Legislature. I urge them to support the Land for Maine’s Future program. It’s important for the future of all Maine children.
