I would like to thank Christie Smith of Lewiston for her recent letter to the editor (March 6) concerning the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society’s adoption policies. Smith is correct in stating that the Humane Society requires any potential adopters’ pets to have regular veterinary care. This includes any vaccinations required by the state of Maine, heartworm prevention and any additional vaccines recommended by their own veterinarian. With the recent media coverage about the possible over-vaccinations of pets, the Humane Society recognizes that some owners may choose to vaccinate less. For these pet owners, we accept results of a titer test. This simple blood test, done through a veterinarian’s office, lets the owners know the immunity level for their animal and as a result, they only have to vaccinate as needed.
Our policies are in place for the protection of the animals we care for. Their well-being is our first priority when finding responsible homes for them.
Steven Dostie, shelter director, Greater Androscoggin Humane Society
