FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – Miguel Tejada had three hits, Chris Stynes tripled home the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning and the Baltimore Orioles beat Boston 5-3 on Monday, handing the Red Sox their fifth straight loss.

Geronimo Gil homered for the Orioles, and starter Daniel Cabrera allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings.

With one out in the seventh, loser Mark Malaska hit Tim Raines Jr. with a pitch. Raines stole second and scored on a triple to right-center by Stynes, a non-roster invitee trying to make the Orioles as a backup infielder.

Nick Markakis, Baltimore’s first-round pick in the 2003 draft, followed with a single to score Stynes.

Orioles relievers pitched 4 2-3 hitless innings following Cabrera’s departure. Bruce Chen got out of a two-on jam in the fifth.

“Every time he goes out there, he does his job. He keeps you in the game,” Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said.

Jay Witasick tossed a perfect seventh for the win. Steve Reed pitched a scoreless inning and B.J. Ryan worked the ninth for a save.

Left-hander John Halama, bidding for a spot in the Red Sox rotation, worked only two innings. He gave up one run and four hits, but was undone by a pair of infield singles that prolonged the first inning.

“We made him throw so many pitches. … I think he threw well, but I didn’t think it was fair to send him out for another inning,” Boston manager Terry Francona said.
